Developing Your Intuition With The Tarot

As children we tend to rely very much on our instinct rather than knowledge and practical experience.
But over time we are gradually conditioned by society to base actions, thoughts and feelings on evidence and logic.
Now is a good time to remember the importance and power of intuition; when you have to make a split-second decision, you will most likely follow your instinct rather than logic and reason.
Using your intuition is also an important skill when reading the Tarot.
You may know lots of different meanings for all the cards, but which one is relevant in each reading you do depends on your intuition.
How intuitive are you?
There are some key rules to identify your current level of intuition:
1. You recognise an object with very little time to see it properly, usually less than a second.
Try flicking through magazines and recall afterwards the images you noticed. You can also look quickly at group photos of friends and family and identify afterwards specific people you noticed.
2. When you look at clouds, many images come to your mind.
Making creative associations through this kind of openness help you to generate new ideas and insights.
3. You can take in a scene quickly and recall details.
Look at a crowd scene and then look away. Ask yourself questions about details, perhaps individual actions, clothing, weather, surrrounding area, buildings etc. If your intuition works well, then you are not aware that you take in all this information. It all works 'automatically'.
How can you improve your intuition?
There are a few universal principles to help you develop this skill:
1. Become an expert
The more you know about a subject matter, the sharper your intuitive sense will be. So, the more you practise and read about tarot and absorb the information, the better your readings and accuracy will become over time.
This doesn't mean you have to memorise anything but simply pick up the information through practice, conversation or in written material and then let go.
This way you will automatically store knowledge in your unconscious and recall it later when you need it with the help of your intuition.
2. Pay attention to your feelings
Don't ignore that inner voice telling you that something is not quite right with the person or situation you are dealing with. Let go of trying to find 'evidence'. Instead just act according to how you feel.
3. Trust your intuition
Relax; it's not easy to reduce the input of a conscious mind, but regular exercise will help you improve.
Start a journal; record your dreams, don't doubt the validity of the messages that come through to you; be conscious of your environment and tune in.
Try pulling a tarot card at random and without hesitation come up with an instant message from the universe for yourself.
Avoid censoring your thoughts; in that moment you stop using your intuition. If nothing comes up, pull the next card. Keep going until something 'clicks' in your head and ideas start trickling.
4. Stay Healthy
Keep your energy clear; meditate, eat wholesome foods, get active and sleep well.
Regular fresh air activities will help you clear your head from distracting thoughts and become more receptive to more useful messages when they come through.

The Power Of The Moon
I'm not sure how much their existence in our solar system influences us here on Earth, but I keep an open mind and certainly know about the proven power of the moon, without which our planet would be unable to sustain life.
Knowing that the moon regulates the tides on Earth, its gravitational pull not only affects the oceans but also us human beings (plants and animals, too!), who consist of around 75% water.

The waxing and waning of the moon regulates women's menstrual cycles, hormonal balance, and it is pretty certain this as a result affects our moods and feelings.
Astrology, developed and practised for thousands of years, has picked up on that, carefully examining the planetary influences over a long period of time.

In the ancient world, astrology and astronomy were closely linked, whereas nowadays it is strictly divided between the science and exploration of the universe and the esoteric practice of consulting the stars for guidance.
More people nowadays live more consciously with the power of the moon.

When you are in tune with the lunar influence on your life, you can make use of it to your advantage.
For example, you can use the different phases of the moon to make things happen:
New Moon (the waxing, growing phase): starting something new, new ideas are created, planning and research, learning something new and building on what you know to reap the rewards in the future.
Second Quarter (half moon, gibbous): what was started during the New Moon phase, is now beginning to take shape and manifest; check plans, review, adjust, take the next step towards your goal.
Full Moon: a time of fruition, fulfilment, achievement, culmination, pinnacle, reaping rewards - depending on the efforts during the previous phases.
Waning Moon: a time to rest, reflect and letting go; banishing, moving on.

The Moon Cards in the Tarot
In Tarot, the moon is associated with the High Priestess, The Moon and The Chariot (the moon rules the zodiac sign Cancer, which is assigned to the Chariot).
The moon is also associated with the following Minor Arcana cards:
Six of Pentacles, Four of Cups, Two of Swords, Nine of Wands, Seven of Swords.
What are the lunar qualities associated with these cards?
In Astrology, the moon symbolises the cycles of birth, death and rebirth, and is associated with feelings, emotions, intuition, the unconscious, instinct, self-nourishment and femininity.
Here are some ideas for the moon cards:
Six of Pentacles: feelings about money and charity; feeling good about your own generosity, or feeling uncomfortable about receiving financial help. Balancing fluctuating circumstances; unstable finances (temporary or freelance work can create periods of high and low income)

Tarot 2012 - Are you Ready for the Transformation?
I don't know about you, but over the past few months I've been noticing subtle changes within myself, and I have a strong sense that these changes will lead to profound and transformational growth in the coming year.
For example, I have become more confident about my abilities; I can deal with criticism and ignorance in a more tolerant way; I'm more self-reliant.
I have the urge to share my knowledge, wisdom and spirituality with you and many others, in order to help lots of people to turn their own dreams into reality and fulfil their potential.
I have never EVER written so much like I have done recently on this blog! Whatever is going on inside me, I love it 😄
Perhaps it's all down to that Mayan 2012 prophecy. Last year I wrote a post on my old blog about it and its connection (how I see it) to the Tarot. I re-publish it here with some updates:
The 21st December 2012 is a significant date in the Mayan calendar; on this day the 13th baktun (cycle) is coming to an end after more than 5000 years.
Perhaps it's all down to that Mayan 2012 prophecy. Last year I wrote a post on my old blog about it and its connection (how I see it) to the Tarot. I re-publish it here with some updates:
The 21st December 2012 is a significant date in the Mayan calendar; on this day the 13th baktun (cycle) is coming to an end after more than 5000 years.
The Mayans were excellent astrologers; their calendar is based on the solar system and the movements of the stars.
We know that there is an astrological reason, why the Mayans determined 21/12/2012 as the last day of the current cycle.
On that particular day, all planets in our solar system will align with the black hole situated at the centre of our galaxy, the milky way.
But don’t worry! It’s unlikely that we all get sucked into it, yet if you are familiar with astrological occurrences and how they can affect our lives on Earth, then you might wonder, what the 21st December 2012 will have in store for us.
The Mayans already knew about this date centuries ago, and so did Medieval alchemists and occult scholars in our Western civilisation. The most prominent one, Nostradamus, has also mentioned this date in his Lost Manuscript together with images of a wheel, sun, moon, and angels, which are all symbols found in the Tarot images.
Now that I’ve mentioned the Middle Ages, I can start to explore the connection between the date 21/12/2012 and the Tarot, which first appeared in Europe in the 15th century.
The Mayans already knew about this date centuries ago, and so did Medieval alchemists and occult scholars in our Western civilisation. The most prominent one, Nostradamus, has also mentioned this date in his Lost Manuscript together with images of a wheel, sun, moon, and angels, which are all symbols found in the Tarot images.
Now that I’ve mentioned the Middle Ages, I can start to explore the connection between the date 21/12/2012 and the Tarot, which first appeared in Europe in the 15th century.
Does the Tarot tell us anything about what to expect on that special day?
From a numerology point of view, we can assign the following trump cards to this date:
All these cards seem to make sense; there's a completion of a cycle (The World), a need for sacrifice (Hanged Man) after evaluation (Judgement) and adjustment (Justice).
21 – The World
12 – The Hanged Man
20 – Judgement
11 – Justice; you get this number when you add up the numbers of the date.
In addition, you can also include The Fool (no. 0), The Magician (no.1) and the High Priestess (no.2).

Perhaps this is a sign to get back to basics and make a new start (The Fool).

Personally I don’t believe in doom and gloom predictions.
Instead, I feel that major changes are coming our way on a more personal level, which could sometimes be uncomfortable but eventually will lead to a more sustainable development and evolution of humankind and our planet.

Tarot Numerology: Five
But what about Arcanum number 5, the Hierophant? This character seems benevolent on his throne, advising or preaching to his disciples, but the Hierophant is associated with ethics, morality, education, humanity and conscience, all of which can cause struggle, tension, upset and many heated discussions in addition to narrow-mindedness, intolerance, prejudice and radicalisation. If the Hierophant stands for religion, does the number Five indicate its inherent tendency to create havoc?
However, all is not lost. The number Five is asking for mediation, a middle way, re-instating the equilibrium, which is perfectly represented by Temperance, Arcanum number 14 (1 + 4 = 5). Temperance is a healing card, the angel a religious symbol, which suggests the need for compassion, mercy, forgiveness and moderation in times of strife.
Conflict and tension may also be apparent, when the following card combinations appear:
1. The Magician (1) + The Emperor (4) - two strong characters struggling to combine independence with responsibility
2. The High Priestess (2) + The Empress (3) - the need to combine opposites (night/day, unconscious/conscious, reflection/creativity) in order to create harmony
The Fives may indicate a tough situation, but at the same time they offer an eye-opening experience and eventually resolution and progress ahead.

Tarot & Quotes: The High Priestess

The High Priestess symbolises intuition, the unconscious, hidden knowledge and spirituality. The image we see here is from the self-published Anna K.Tarot, its beautiful artwork dominated by blue and yellow colours reflecting darkness and light.
The following quote is from The Book of Qualities by Ruth Gendler, in which human qualities and emotions are brought to life as people in whimsical and to some extend spiritual prose. This is quite an enjoyable book; for a light-hearted yet insightful read about the human psyche highly recommended:
“I invited Intuition to stay in my house when my roommates went North. I warned her that I am territorial and I keep the herb jars in alphabetical order. Intuition confessed that she has a ‘spotty employment record.’ She was fired from her last job for daydreaming.
When Intuition moved in, she washed all the windows, cleaned out the fireplace, planted fruit trees, and lit purple candles. She doesn’t cook much. She eats beautiful foods, artichokes, avocadoes, persimmons and pomegranates, wild rice with wild mushrooms, chrysanthemum tea. She doesn’t have many possessions. Each thing is special. I wish you could see the way she arranged her treasures on the fireplace mantle. She has a splendid collection of cups, bowls, and baskets.
Well, the herbs are still in alphabetical order, and I can’t complain about how the house looks. Since Intuition moved in, my life has been turned inside out.”

Awakening Your Psychic Muse

The High Priestess in the King's Journey Tarot is one of the many non-traditional images in this deck.
I like Tarot images that diverge from the norm as they offer fresh ideas, new insight and a different perspective to a card you may otherwise felt stuck in a rut with.
In the traditional Tarot image, the High Priestess is usually portrayed sitting passively in front of a veil holding a book, but here she is more active, standing up, trance-like, summoning a ghostly figure rising from a cauldron behind her.
At first sight she looks as if she is lifting a veil. With her open arms she is welcoming and receptive to messages from her subconscious, the otherworld or the universe.
It's a night scene illuminated by the full moon. In the background we see two gnomes tending a field, perhaps sowing seeds, suggesting the process of germination or conception.

There is a close connection between the High Priestess and the Moon card in the Tarot.
Whereas the Moon symbolizes imagination, dreams, emotions and illusions, the High Priestess is using her intuition and introspection to make sense of the lunar influence and its messages lingering in and surfacing from our unconscious.
Key Meanings: revealing mysteries and what is hidden; lifting the 'fog' to see more clearly, knowing deep down the answer to your question, dream interpretation; be patient, all will be revealed at the right time; divination, psychic abilities, reflection, spiritual awareness and guidance, psychology, psycho-therapy, listening to your inner voice, trusting your intuition

- Pay attention to your feelings and emotions. Making a sensible decision may not be right, if you don't listen to your heart.
- If you are approached for guidance and advice, ensure you see the big picture, so you can provide wise counsel.
