The Hermit on an Autumn Walk

Here's the Hermit with a new quote - it's from the Bible!

The Hermit Tarot of Quotes

Life is as simple or as complicated as you make it.

the simple path

Walking through the forest on a sunny Autumn day, watching the squirrels forage and listening to the birds tweet, life becomes suddenly very simple, even if only for a brief time.

Eight of Cups Tarot of Quotes

Eight of Cups Haiku:

Tired of playing
the game of hearts, letting go
and starting afresh.

“Poetry heals the wounds inflicted by reason.”
- Novalis

Keep calm and go for a walk

“Sometimes you've got to let everything go - purge yourself.

If you are unhappy with anything, whatever is bringing you down, get rid of it.

Because you'll find that when you're free, your true creativity, your true self comes out.”

Inspiration - Healing Yourself

Aquatic Tarot, www.aquatictarot.de
“It is precisely because we resist the darkness in ourselves that we miss the depths of the loveliness, beauty, brilliance, creativity, and joy that lie at our core.” - Thomas Moore, Dark Nights of the Soul

The deepest wounds we all carry are locked in our subconscious. Deep memories and subtle impressions; unfinished experiences, rooted in the past.

The pain from those wounds comes to revisit, to block and paralyse us in the moment called now. We all know it comes without warning: "Why am I feeling this way... I didn't mean to do that... I don't know what made me say that."

Healing does not mean finding and treating every single inner scar which sends its message to haunt us.

It means

going even deeper

past those wounds

beyond those distant memories and recordings of unfinished business

to the core of our self

to the heart of our spirit

where we find the light and warmth of our own core qualities of love and peace.

They are eternally present within us; they are what we need to heal all our inner wounds. That's why this kind of deep healing is called spirituality and not therapy. (thoughtfortoday.org)

"The wound is the place where the light enters you." - Rumi

In your darkest moment, when the pain seems to become unbearable..embrace it and nurture your determination to rise into the light again like a phoenix from the ashes.

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

Weekly Inspiration: Abundance

abundance
“Riches are not from abundance of worldly goods, but from a contented mind.” Mohammed

It’s not easy feeling rich when you have to make ends meet.

It’s tough to be poor worrying about putting enough food on the table for your family and having the money to pay next month’s rent.

As a student back in the 80s, I was badly strapped for cash whilst creating a massive student loan debt, which took me 20 years to pay off.

In those days I never felt particularly well off. Although I wasn’t starving and could afford paying for a roof over my head, there were certain things I could never afford and experience, such as fabulous holidays abroad.

Sometimes I felt disappointed and frustrated; there I was, paying off my debt by working in corporate jobs that made me ill, while others seemed to have a whale of a time buying large houses, driving luxury cars and going on fancy holidays and weekend breaks twice a year.

Thankfully, I never felt envious; I was just wondering, how these people managed to afford those expenses.

Today I know they took out massive debts to feed their desire to have it all and “to keep up with the Jones’s”.

Now that I’ve entered the second half of my life, I am far more relaxed about money (lack of) and possessions.

I have learned that freedom is more important to me, and that means owning less. Get rid of the clutter, and you’re as free as a bird.

Every time I give another charity bag away, I feel lighter and relieved.

I prefer to upcycle, make my own, buy second-hand; no longer interested in that mass produced rubbish from China. Love vintage stuff found in charity shops and thrift stores.

If you feel poor or you think you miss out compared to others, look around you and see what you have that money can’t buy:

love, health, freedom, friendships, wisdom, time, intelligence, dreams and yes, happiness

Feeling happy is your choice despite your circumstances.

You own more treasures than you think you do; look around you and recognise them.

Here are some ways to help you feel rich without money, which I have practiced over the years:

Create abundance in your life by letting go of material desires you cannot afford.

Stop being a slave to materialism.

Live within your means.

Don't be fooled by advertising. You really don't need all that stuff.

Enjoy the simple pleasures.

Have a few good friends in real life and nurture those friendships. The hundreds or thousands of friends you have collected on Facebook are quite literally just virtual (except the handful of them you know in reality).

Be grateful for your health. In fact, be grateful for all the treasures you have that money can’t buy.

Let nature cheer you up - plants, forests, the sea, animals, the weather, the sky, the moon and the stars.

Look forward to every new day and the opportunities it may offer you.

Love yourself and your body.

Spread an abundant amount of love.

Be part of and contribute towards your local community. Hard times can be a great opportunity to get together with people for mutual support and strengthen community spirit.

There is no need for expensive Christmas gifts, not even for your children. They need to learn that life doesn't depend on obtaining the latest gadget or made-to-measure trainers. Help them to escape the consumerism trap, so they can live happier lives.

Enjoy what you have while you pursue what you want.

But having a mindset of abundance doesn't mean belittling poverty.

It doesn't mean you should be content with living below the poverty line and have no aspiration to better yourself.

Yes, I know from my own experience that it is truly tough to be poor, but counting your blessings with a positive mindset despite hardship will make it easier to find a way out of poverty than resignation, blaming others, envy and bitterness.

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

Tarot & Quotes: Wheel of Fortune

Animalis Arcanum Tarot
© Oephebia 2011
"Fate is like a strange, unpopular restaurant, filled with odd waiters who bring you things you never asked for and don't always like." - Lemony Snicket

The Wheel of Fortune is relentlessly spinning throughout our lives. Sometimes we're in luck, at other times we need to deal with a misfortune.

Most of these events seem to be out of our control, but quite often we will have done something beforehand, perhaps unknown to us, that will have led to the Wheel of Fortune moment: cause and effect, karma.

"We create our fate every day we live." - Henry Miller

In a few non-traditional decks, the Wheel of Fortune is represented by a fortune-teller; the unknown future can be scary when you want to stay in control.

The Wheel of Fortune in the Animalis Arcanum Tarot by Oephebia is a delightful image of a cat, whose curiosity and playfulness leads her to spin the Wheel. She's probably also keen to catch the bird, which no doubt will fly off any moment having already spotted the little predator. The cat is unaware of having set the "wheel in motion"; the bird flies off, just when the cat is about to pounce and in that movement may even knock over the wheel.

The cat, unaware, has taken fate into her own "paws", and in a reading, the Wheel of Fortune may suggest that you need to do the same. When this card comes up, why not spin the Wheel? Ask yourself, what can you do or change, even just for a month or so, that might have a big, positive, nurturing impact on your life?

Of course, when we cannot find an explanation for an unexpected event that has long-term consequences, it often seems that higher forces beyond our control influence our lives. In that moment all we can do is control our reaction to it.

"How people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours." - Wayne Dyer

Whatever fate has in store for you, it's up to you to make the most of it.

"All of us have bad luck and good luck. The man who persists through the bad luck - who keeps right on going - is the man who is there when the good luck comes - and is ready to receive it." - Robert Collier

"If you can't change your fate, change your attitude." - Amy Tan

Oephebia's Animalis Arcanum Tarot is a visually attractive deck-in-progress with a wealth of symbolism and the presence of animals on each card. The Major Arcana is nearly completed. Take a look at the other beautiful images on her website: Animalis Arcanum Tarot.

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

A Message from the Five of Wands

Many fights are not worth fighting.

Struggling to gain attention from others is often a wasted effort.

You cannot please everyone, but that's okay.

Let go of anyone with negative attitude towards you. You don't need these people in your precious life.

And when you let go of control, anger and the need to conquer, you will find that life becomes much easier.

AffirmationI stand my ground and meet conflict with poise and dignity.

Pentacles - The Fruits of Harvest

Sharman Caselli Tarot Deck
If you have just arrived from Joanna's sparkling Sun Goddess Tarot blog as part of the Tarot Blog Hop series - welcome! You will find a link at the end of this post to continue your ride on the Lammas Blog Hop Train, and I hope you will enjoy each contribution to today's topic:

Pentacles - The Fruits of Harvest

On the first day of August, the Pagan community is celebrating the festival of Lammas to mark the time of the wheat harvest. But high summer offers more than just harvesting wheat; fruit and vegetables should all be plentiful at this time of year.

The suit of Pentacles represents fertility, growth, nature, sustenance and hard work, and the Nine of Pentacles is the card that speaks to me the most to mark the summer harvest this year.

The card shown here depicts a woman surrounded by an abundant crop of grapes in her garden. The castle in the background, her beautiful dress and the bird of prey on her hand symbolise her wealth and status. She is enjoying a quiet moment amongst her harvest, and perhaps for all of us, this is a time to appreciate what we have achieved so far.

The Nine of Pentacles symbolises Abundance. Now is a good time to focus on what we have rather than on what we are missing. Let us also recognise our potential and possibilities before us.

On a personal note, I have been on a journey of change since February this year. Inspirational business coaching has affected my professional work in a profound and exhilarating way, which also had a positive impact on my private life. The gradual transformation my Tarot business has undergone over the recent months is now starting to offer some rewards. My head is still buzzing with ideas, and there is still a long way to go, but now is a good time to take a deep breath and pause for some appreciation and reflection.

I have drawn three cards to give me an idea of where I am now and where my next step may lead to:

Present situation: Three of Pentacles - Next step: Page of Wands - Result: The Magician (Sharman Caselli Tarot)

I'm not intending to bore you with a lengthy interpretation of these cards. Let me show you instead my own version of the Nine of Pentacles, exclusively designed for this post:

Tarot of Quotes
The blackcurrants in my garden are ready for harvesting; this year we've got loads, and they will be turned into some yummy jam tomorrow.

Whilst searching for a suitable quote, I've come across a few, which offer us all some tips on how to achieve our goals and reap a fruitful harvest:

"We must give more in order to get more. It is the generous giving of ourselves that produces the generous harvest.”
- Orison Swett Marden

“Even after a bad harvest there must be sowing.”
- Seneca

“He that has a good harvest must be content with a few thistles”
- Spanish Proverb

“If you wait until the wind and the weather are just right, you will never plant anything and never harvest anything.”
- Bible

What is your harvest like at this time of year? What is your next step to take you closer to where you want to be?

Now it's time for you to move on to Alison's wonderful Games of Thrones blog for more Lammas/harvest musings.

Before you go, you may wish to subscribe to my blog via RSS or email. It would be lovely to see you again!

Giving Up The Habit Of Worrying

giving up the habit of worrying nine of swords aquatic tarot
 Aquatic Tarot © Andreas Schröter
The Nine of Swords is all about worrying, anxieties and fears.

It's obvious when looking at the image: the woman seems to have just woken up from a nightmare, the background is pitch black, no glimmer of light, as if all hope and optimism has been lost.

The suit of Swords relates to the element air, which is associated with the mind, logic, reason and intellect.

The pattern on the blanket is a combination of a red rose and the symbols of the zodiac air signs, which suggests that anxiety is created in the mind based on emotional attachments.

Emotions can be irrational, and as a result worries and fears can be irrational, too:

"I've suffered a great many catastrophies in my life. Most of them never happened." - Mark Twain

This quote sums me up quite nicely. When I was in my twenties, I suffered badly from anxiety, caused by irrational fears about illnesses (in my imagination I suffered from the most horrific incurable conditions), fears about the future (as a student I worried, if I would ever get a job and earn a living), fear of flying, fear of eating British beef.....

Hey! 25 years on, and I'm still alive despite some health issues, managed to get a couple of well-paid jobs along the way, but I was also unemployed a few times (worrying about "Will I ever get another job?"). British beef hasn't made me gone mad yet...so far, and I know now that all those horrible feelings of anxiety in my early adult years were a waste of time.

Let's face it: worrying serves us no purpose other than to make us feel tense and miserable, especially when we worry about things beyond our control.

"Worry, like a rocking chair, will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere." - Vance Havner

Instead, focus on generating kind and optimistic thoughts, so life can begin to flow into more positive directions. Focus on creating the life you want, rather than creating fears.

Try this:
"I keep the telephone of my mind open to peace, harmony, health, love and abundance. Then, whenever doubt, anxiety or fear try to call me, they keep getting a busy signal - and soon they'll forget my number."  - Edith Armstrong

It is true that most worries and fears are blown out of proportion. Many people worry too much, because they think too much. Over-thinking is a bit like over-eating; the heaviness makes it impossible to remain light and flexible.

"No man ever sank under the burden of the day. It is when tomorrow's burden is added to the burden of today that the weight is more than a man can bear." - George MacDonald

feel the fear and do it anyway
If you worry a lot, then this book
might help you
When people have negative thoughts regularly, they gradually become attached to them. Negative thoughts become a habit, and it's so damn hard to get rid of any kind of habit you have nurtured for so long.

What is the solution?

Learn to detach yourself from negative thoughts. Detachment is letting go; acknowledge your worries and fears, but then release them, like soap bubbles that float up and away into the sky.

Think for a moment why you harbour these anxieties; do you need attention or reassurance? I needed lots of reassurance (=attention?) on a regular basis.

But one day I realised that reassurance was like a drug feeding my habit of fear.

I stopped asking for reassurance.

The trick is to break the cycle, stop feeding the fear...stop paying it attention...not letting it rule my life. Feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

I decided I have to let life take its course. Whatever will be, will be.

I went cold-turkey. It was tough, but I started to keep myself busy with adventures and creative projects that I enjoyed and helped me grow (yes, Tarot was part of that, too ;))

"Loneliness, insomnia, and change: the fear of these is even worse than the reality". - Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic's Notebook, 1966

Remember that when real difficulties crop up in your life, you will be stronger and more resilient than you think. Real difficulties, unlike the imaginary ones, can be overcome.

Life isn't always a smooth ride. Something bad can happen tomorrow, next week or whenever, but it's beyond my control, there is nothing I can do about it except withdrawing from life, and I don't want to do that.

Nurture a desire to be free from negative thoughts:

"Fear can keep us up all night long, but faith makes one fine pillow."  - Philip Gulley

Let go and know that all will be well. Trust that life will take care of you. Have faith.

Don't let fears hold you back!

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

Do You Compare and Despair?

How often do you compare yourself with others? And how often does that make you feel down and insecure?

If you are a budding artist, writer or entrepreneur, or you are working hard building a rewarding career in any other discipline, you will always come across people, who are further ahead than you.

They may already be in a position where you want to be. They seem to be more popular, or perhaps they make more money than you.

Whilst you're working your socks off to make a living, they seem to have accomplished that level of security and success that you are yearning for.

And whilst you keep comparing yourself and start to despair about your imagined inadequacies, the gap between your current position and your goal will become larger as your confidence and self-esteem gradually go down the drain.

So now is a good time to change the way you think, and here are some tips on how to do it:
  • There will always be people more successful than you. Some may even seem more talented. Get over it! That doesn't mean there isn't a place for you in Successville. Nobody is better than you, just DIFFERENT. Find your own niche based on your strengths and skills and create something unique in your own style.
  • Learn from the people you admire. Study their work and how they operate; along the way you will discover some "tricks of the trade" you may not have thought of before.
  • Network, communicate and build relationships with like-minded people including those you admire. Always give kindness, respect and support. You will find that this will be given to you in return.
  • Admire and be INSPIRED. Never imitate other people's work or personalities. You are unique, and you have something special to offer to the world. Develop your own ideas, style and personality.
  • Be true to yourself. Don't let others stop you from following your dream. In the end, you have to live with the decisions you make, not them. Surround yourself with people, who encourage and support you.
  • Be grateful for constructive criticism; you will learn from it, and it will help you progress.
  • There's no such thing as failure as long as you keep going and love what you do. Always be open to new ideas, new directions and new possibilities.
  • Use a mantra or affirmation to switch your negative self-image into a positive one. Stop saying “I’ll never be as good as her” and say instead: “I am good at what I do, and I’m learning and getting better every day.” Keep repeating the positive self-talk and you will begin to recognise your worth.
Remember, you can choose what to think, so focus on thoughts that increase your self-esteem and make you feel empowered.

By simply being aware of your thoughts and knowing you can alter them already empowers you to control their quality.

Here are some ways to help you increase your self-esteem and escape the compare-and-despair-trap:

1. Make a list about your characteristics, strengths, talents, skills, gifts and abilities and how you utilise them. What actions do you take to demonstrate your qualities?

2. Write down what you love and admire about yourself.

3. Create your mantras and affirmations to remind you of your power (pull some Tarot or oracle cards for inspiration).

4. When you feel negative about yourself, what could you do to help you feel better?

5. Think of activities you enjoy, people and pets who makes you happy, places you love… and anything else that brings a smile on your face – make a list of all those positive things around you and you start shifting your focus on the good stuff going on in your life.

Regular positive self-evaluation will help you strengthen and maintain a healthy level of self-esteem.

Write it all down. Record it in your journal. You can start right now to be the author of your life!

Warmest wishes,

Christiane

Inspirational Message For The Weekend

Aquatic Tarot © Andreas Schröter
Friday is usually a happy day for most people, so I thought I'd share with you an inspirational thought about Death, which I received in my inbox the other day.

For me it's the quintessential summary of this widely feared card, a message about detachment and renewal we can all embrace in a happily liberating way:

Die Alive

To the unenlightened, death comes but once a lifetime. To those who have chosen to become enlightened, there are a thousand chosen deaths before it's time to leave the body and move on. This kind of death is the releasing off all our attachments, from false identity to opinions, from people to possessions.

Cutting the subtle threads of attachment frees the spirit from fear, and when the time comes to move on, it's like 'shooting the breeze'.

Dying alive is simply letting go of all you hold fast to in your mind. It doesn't actually mean losing anything, simply changing your relationship with the things in your life today.

The greatest pleasure for every soul is the result of choosing the living death called detachment. Why? Because attachment is a form of slavery, and it all takes place in our own minds. And the result of detachment? Real freedom. - Thoughtfortoday.org.uk

Enjoy your weekend!

Christiane

The Power of Faith

I was pondering Faith the other day. Not faith in a particular religion, but faith in yourself, the people you depend on, nature, the universe, the Wheel of Life and whatever higher force you believe in.

Nurturing your faith is letting go of control, which quite often can be a heavy burden lifted off one's shoulders. We cannot control everything around us. When I let go of control and just have faith that all will be well despite uncertainties, I feel a sense of relief and lightness coming over me.

When something doesn't quite work out the way I want it to be, then faith helps me to acknowledge its purpose and value, which I will discover at some point.

Mind you, faith goes hand in hand with doubt, but it's also accompanied by trust. Nurturing your faith and trust will weaken doubts and fears, which many people suffer from today, and I think that's why the above quote spoke to me when I read it.

Perhaps its message will inspire you too to relinquish control and just flow with faith not only to alleviate life's burdens but also have the courage to pursue your path with conviction and optimism.

Tarot & Quotes: The Magician

Magician, Star Tarot
The Magician, Star Tarot
© Cathy McClelland
“The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channelled toward some great good.” - Brian Tracy
The Magician is a powerful card symbolising potential, intent and manifestation. The image I have chosen to accompany today's inspirational quotes is from the wonderful Star Tarot created by artist Cathy McClelland

Her Major Arcana set can be purchased on her website, and I'm thrilled to have learned, that she has signed with Schiffer Publishing and is currently working on the Minor Arcana. I can't wait to get my hands on this deck!

“The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible.” - Arthur C Clarke

“Whatever your discipline, become a student of excellence in all things. Take every opportunity to observe people who manifest the qualities of mastery. These models of excellence will inspire you and guide you toward the fulfilment of your highest potential.”
- Tony Buzan

What is your favourite quote that embraces the spirit of the Magician?

09-05-2012 Update: Cathy McClelland has informed me today, that the Star Tarot will most likely be published by Schiffer in 2014...a long time to wait, but I think it will be worth it!

Warmest wishes,

Christiane
